What is an electronic-only toll point?

It is a toll collection point where no onsite manual payment is possible. A traditional toll plaza usually has an electronic toll lane and one or more lanes for manual payment. On motorways with no manual tollbooths, i.e. with only electronic plazas and no lanes for manual payment, there are no facilities for road users to stop and pay in cash or equivalent as they go through.

Are the electronic-only toll points located in toll plazas?

On motorways with no manual toll collection, i.e. with electronic-only tolling, there is no actual toll plaza. Vehicles pass under toll gantries built over the motorway itself.

How do road users know that they are entering a motorway with no manual tollbooths, i.e. with electronic-only toll collection?

Toll sections are clearly indicated by a sign before they start. Motorway sections with no manual tollbooths, i.e. with electronic-only tolling, have a sign saying "electronic toll section".

How do road users know the amount of the toll they have to pay on a motorway with no manual tollbooths, i.e. with electronic-only tolling?

There is an established toll for each toll point (gantry). There are onsite panels at each collection point showing the toll for each class of vehicle.

What is a transponder?

It is an electronic device that uses electromagnetic waves to transmit its identification code, in accordance with the European Electronic Toll Service. The Via Verde device is an example of a transponder.

Do foreign-registered vehicles also pay electronic-only tolls?


How do road users pay tolls on a motorway with no manual tollbooths, i.e. with electronic-only tolling?

Road users must subscribe to a payment system, which is activated whenever the vehicle passes under a toll gantry.

Can foreign-registered vehicles use the post-payment system (payment after using the motorway)?


What payment systems are available for foreign-registered vehicles?

Drivers of foreign-registered vehicles can choose from one of the following four solutions:

The EASYToll service

The EASYToll system is a new solution for automatic payment of electronic tolls, for tourists and immigrants, with the association of a credit card (Mastercard and Visa) to the license plate of the vehicle. The driver, not having to leave the vehicle, enters the credit card in the payment terminal and the system automatically associates the vehicle's license plate to the bankcard. The tolls rates owed are directly debited to the account associated with the card.

At the time of sign up, valid for 30 days, a ticket is issued as proof and must be kept.

The driver is always able to correct license plates numbers or cancel the membership, through the Call Center:

  • 707 500 501 (if in Portugal) or
  • 00 351 79 555 2128 (from abroad) or  
  • EasyToll Services.

The sign up has a cost of 0.60€+VAT and each journey has an administrative cost of 0.26€+VAT.

Sign up at the Welcome Points located at the border posts at the following locations:

A28 - Viana do Castelo; 

A24 - Chaves; 

A25 – Vilar Formoso; 

A22 – Vila Real de Santo António.



The TOLLCard is an "on the shelf" product, activated through an SMS, with a fixed amount to be consumed depending on circulation. This solution allows payment in cash or with bankcard, is valid for one year and your balance can be found on the Internet. It is aimed at tourists and immigrants. The driver can buy a pre-loaded card with 5, 10, 20 or 40 € (with an added service cost of 0.60€+VAT for each purchased card).


After purchasing the card, the driver shall proceed to its activation by sending an SMS by mobile phone with the code printed on the card and the license plate of the vehicle (instructions on the card), so that it is associated with the license plate of the vehicle. You can activate more than one card, with the accumulation of balances.

The driver can check the card balance HERE and when the card balance runs out, the customer will receive an alert SMS. The activated balances will be consumed depending on the use of highways with electronic toll collection only and for each journey it´s applied an administrative cost of 0.26€+VAT.

Each card is valid for one year after its activation.

A tollcard that is not activated or damaged can be returned in any CTT office and its purchasing cost will be refunded. The remaining credit can also be refunded if a credit card was used for the payment (as long this was ordered during the sign up), in a 6 month maximum period.

The driver can buy a prepaid ticket,  with unlimited use for 3 days, for 20€ (only applies to light vehicles) which is added a service cost of 0.60€+VAT and an administrative cost of 0.26€+VAT per journey. There is also an option of a pre-paid ticket with previously defined date and journey:

Journey from Spain - Porto Airport, via A28 or A41 (round trip).

Journey from Spain - Faro Airport via A22 (round trip).


You can still purchase it at A24 highway service areas, at Porto and Faro airports and Matosinhos IKEA.



For frequent stays, the driver may rent a Temporary ‘Via Verde Visitors' Device.            

  1. Cost of rental: € 6 in the first week, and 1.5 € for each week after that;
  2. Initial deposit € 27.50 (value refunded upon return of the device);              
  3. Consumption depending on use;

Validity period of 90 days, extendable for an equal period whenever a new minimum preload is made before the expiration of that period.

For permanent stays, the driver may purchase a Via Verde Device, with direct debit.

If drivers of foreign-registered vehicles do not pay a toll do they have to pay a fine?

Non-payment of a toll is a finable offence for local and foreign road users alike. The fine is 10 times the toll, with a minimum of 25 euros. The concessionaires will also check foreign-registered vehicles, which must have a transponder or an equivalent ticket or receipt.

Will there be checks?

Yes. The concessionaires and toll collection operators will perform frequent spot checks in cooperation with the police, whenever necessary.
